ans stands for clean design solutions inspired by analog technologies. My main area of expertise lies in analog printing and editorial & independent publishing, which I combine with manual skills such as illustration and calligraphy. Whenever possible, I make use of my special skillset to create designs that look and feel different. I believe that the beauty of design lies in the details.
The woman behind Sans is Sandra Staub. Based in Zurich and formerly in Bogota, I work at the intersection of design, print, and illustration. My work draws inspiration from manual methods of graphic production and all things handmade. By embedding my analog skillset within a contemporary, digital context, I create my signature style. The resulting designs are characterized by a clear visual language and the raw power of analog technologies. My work celebrates the beauty of imperfection and the ephemeral.
Many of the projects I have worked on were small, independent projects. I got contacted often for jobs with limited budget in desperate need of help. And I became an expert of making the most out of it. Those are the kind of projects where I shine: Somewhat lost causes where I translate a good idea into good design.
analog printing techniques: spirit duplicator, Risograph, silk screen printing || manual skills: bookbinding, calligraphy, lettering || editorial design: books, zines, magazines, newspapers || print design: posters, fold-outs || illustration techniques: ink marker, fineliner, (color) pencil, ballpoint pen, digital illustration, spray can (street art) || others: concept development, attention to detail.
I hold a Master of Arts in Design from Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and a Degree in Graphic Design from University of Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano (UJTL).
My first job I got while still finishing my degree in Graphic Design, as head of design at the multi-national engineering company CDM Smith. After graduation, I worked for four years as Art Director at independent publisher El Peregrino Ediciones before moving to Zurich to start a masters degree. Currently I work as head of design at the financial company Derivative Partners, while pursuing my passion for print and analog design as part of the Migros Herdern fellowship program of Migros, Stadt Zürich and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
